Strategic Plan

International Strategic Plan

This strategic plan guides Georgia State University’s efforts to internationalize education and to foster the broader goal, as contained in the University Strategic Plan, of building an institution characterized by "practices and programs that embody the ideal of an open, democratic and global society". Georgia State University is committed to achieving even greater inclusion of interdisciplinary, intercultural, and interpersonal perspectives in the curriculum and faculty international initiatives. This strategic plan also reflects the University System of Georgia’s goal of internationalizing education. The System Policy Directive on International Education indicates that "Strategic alliances, partnerships and other collaborative initiatives will link the University System with other parts of the world and bring other parts of the world to Georgia. The synergy thus achieved will provide the international perspective and cross-cultural competence required for Georgians to participate fully and effectively as leaders in a global society".

Mission

Georgia State University is dedicated to promoting excellence and distinction in teaching, research and service through global engagement. This mission is pursued through coordination and implementation of activities in several areas and reflects an institution-wide vision to infuse a global perspective throughout all aspects of student, faculty and academic life at the university.

Georgia State University currently enrolls nearly two thousand international students from over one hundred countries and has international activities on every continent. The university’s strong commitment to expanding its international involvement reflects recognition throughout the University System of Georgia that a global perspective is essential to achieving institutional quality in today’s ever shrinking world.

Strategic Emphasis

Georgia State University’s internationalization activities are concentrated in four principal areas: student study abroad programs, international scholarly programs and exchanges, projects for curricular transformation, and strategic international initiatives. The first two areas provide opportunities for students and faculty to live, study and learn in different parts of the world.

These programs are enriching and broadening for students, faculty and the university. The goal is to further expand these activities and to provide opportunities for all those interested in participating.

Curricular transformation occurs both in individual courses and around particular programs of interest. Often these activities emerge at the faculty, department or college level. These efforts are strongly encouraged and supported and while often implemented in a decentralized fashion, they are supported from a university-wide perspective as well to add coherence and strategic focus.

Through the fourth area, strategic international initiatives, Georgia State University concentrates on a limited number of university-wide programs aimed at substantially enhancing the university’s global profile and bringing excellence and distinctiveness to the institution. Funding proposals for these initiatives must demonstrate that they:

are consistent with the university mission and Strategic Plan

involve participation of a critical mass of accomplished faculty

are multi-disciplinary

plan to leverage external funding

have demonstrated commitment from proposed partners

include plans for integrating proposed activities into teaching, service and or research

are relevant and link to important local national and global objectives of the university and its external constituencies,

and can bring distinction to Georgia State University

Strategic Use of Resources

University funding for strategic international initiatives is allocated by the criteria specified above. In addition international tuition waivers are used strategically to support the goals and objectives set forth in this strategic plan.

The Office of International Affairs provides university-wide coordination and oversight for international activities at Georgia State University and is committed to providing visionary leadership and strategic direction to the university’s efforts to internationalize education.
